Having progressed through the Mini, Class40 and Figaro Beneteau classes, Robin Marais<\/a>\u00a0is taking the next step this year by\u00a0launching his IMOCA campaign<\/strong>\u00a0aboard\u00a0a daggerboard-equipped boat<\/strong>, the former\u00a0<\/em>Coup de Pouce\u00a0sailed by Manu Cousin. With the\u00a0Route du Rhum\u2013Destination Guadeloupe<\/strong>\u00a0later this year and the\u00a02028 Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/strong>\u00a0firmly in his sights,\u00a0<\/em>Sailorz\u00a0takes a closer look.<\/em><\/p>\n

While several established IMOCA skippers \u2013 including Thomas Ruyant, Romain Attanasio and Maxime Sorel \u2013 are still searching for partners to secure their place on the next Vend\u00e9e Globe start line, the 60-foot monohull circuit is welcoming\u00a0several new faces<\/strong>\u00a0this season. Most of them will line up for the\u00a0Route du Rhum\u2013Destination Guadeloupe<\/a>\u00a0on 1 November,\u00a0sailing daggerboard boats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Among them are Japan\u2019s Masa Suzuki, aboard Louis Duc\u2019s former IMOCA, Pierre-Louis Attwell, who has purchased the former\u00a0Lazare<\/em>\u00a0(see our interview<\/em><\/a>), and\u00a0Robin Marais, who has acquired Manu Cousin\u2019s former\u00a0Coup de Pouce<\/em><\/strong>. Born in Lyon, Marais is far from a newcomer to offshore racing, having built his experience in the Mini class (Mini Transat 2013), Class40 (Route du Rhum 2018) and then across five Figaro seasons, highlighted by an eighth-place finish in the 2023 Solitaire du Figaro.<\/p>\n

Why make the move into IMOCA now?\u00a0“First of all because I’ve been thinking about it for a very long time.\u00a0Everything I’ve done over the past few years has been geared towards one goal: racing the Vend\u00e9e Globe one day<\/strong>. It’s a race I’ve dreamed about since I was a child \u2013 I had a poster of Christophe Auguin above my bed,”<\/em>\u00a0says the sailor, who turns 40 on 30 September. Turning that dream into reality requires climbing several steps, something the La Rochelle-based skipper has tackled patiently.<\/p>\n

A defining experience
\nworking alongside Phil Sharp<\/span><\/h2>\n

He first established\u00a0his sporting credibility<\/strong>, notably through the Figaro circuit, before building\u00a0extensive technical expertise<\/strong>\u00a0across numerous projects.\u00a0“When I followed the Vend\u00e9e Globe, I always felt closer to sailor-engineer profiles such as ‘The Professor’<\/em>\u00a0(Michel Desjoyeaux)\u00a0or Jean Le Cam. They’ve always been a huge source of inspiration,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Robin Marais.<\/p>\n

Most notably, he worked\u00a0alongside British skipper Phil Sharp<\/strong>, who launched\u00a0OceansLab Innovations<\/em>\u00a0in November 2023, a Manuard-designed foiling IMOCA powered by an innovative hydrogen-electric energy system. The project ultimately failed to qualify in time for the 2024 Vend\u00e9e Globe.\u00a0“That project was an incredible life experience<\/strong>\u00a0over six to eight months, allowing me to work closely with these machines. Because Phil was busy with other aspects of the programme, he wasn’t around very much on site, so I ended up taking on significant technical responsibility.”<\/em><\/p>\n

That experience convinced him to\u00a0launch his own IMOCA campaign in 2025<\/strong>, focusing from the outset on a daggerboard boat rather than a foiler.\u00a0“My priority is simply to be on the start line in 2028. Looking at it pragmatically,\u00a0a daggerboard boat made much more sense in several respects<\/strong>: financially, of course, but also from a sporting perspective, with what should be a much quicker learning curve.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The next challenge was finding the right IMOCA<\/strong>\u00a0and securing the funding to buy it.\u00a0“We came very close to purchasing Tanguy Le Turquais’ former boat<\/em>\u00a0(Lazare)\u00a0during the summer of 2025, but it ultimately didn’t happen,”<\/em>\u00a0Marais explains.\u00a0“At the end of last winter, I realised we absolutely had to launch the project this year if we wanted to be on the next Vend\u00e9e Globe start line.\u00a0For me, competing in the Route du Rhum was essential<\/strong>, both from a sporting perspective and as a way of bringing partners into the project.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“The challenge is still far from won”<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Following a recommendation from a friend,\u00a0he eventually contacted Manu Cousin<\/strong>\u00a0this spring. Having recently acquired Arnaud Boissi\u00e8res’ former foiling IMOCA, Cousin was looking to sell his previous boat,\u00a0Coup de Pouce<\/em>, a Farr design launched in 2006 for Jean-Pierre Dick.\u00a0“This boat\u00a0wasn’t originally on my shortlist. Manu invited me to Les Sables to inspect the boat and, together with my technical director<\/em>\u00a0(naval architect\u00a0Antoine Mainfray<\/a>),\u00a0we immediately fell in love with her<\/strong>. Our number one criterion was finding a platform that was structurally sound, and this one looked impeccable. The asking price also seemed fair\u00a0<\/em>[he prefers not to disclose it, Ed.], so\u00a0the deal was completed very soon after that first visit<\/strong>, financed by a long-standing investor who has supported me for the past ten years. Without him, this project simply wouldn’t have been possible.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The purchase will become final once the sea trials are completed at the end of next week.\u00a0The boat will arrive in La Rochelle on 12 July<\/strong>\u00a0and has been renamed\u00a0Respire<\/a>.\u00a0“Having suffered from asthma as a child, I wanted the name to highlight the importance of\u00a0protecting air quality<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Marais, whose previous campaign supported the charity Ma chance moi aussi, which helps provide vulnerable young people with equal opportunities.\u00a0“We also hope to bring two additional charities on board to work on both air quality and the marine environment.”<\/em><\/p>\n

And what about the budget?<\/strong>\u00a0“Our target for this year was \u20ac500,000. I won’t say exactly where we stand today, but\u00a0our minimum operating threshold was \u20ac300,000<\/strong>, currently funded by a group of long-standing partners. Because we’ve acquired a boat that’s already in excellent condition, we can operate on a relatively modest budget this season. That won’t be the case in years two and three, when we’ll need greater technical resources and new sails, so the plan is to grow progressively.\u00a0We’re targeting \u20ac750,000 in 2027 and close to \u20ac1 million for the Vend\u00e9e Globe year<\/strong>. The challenge is still far from won.”<\/em><\/p>\n

For now, Marais’ immediate objective is to\u00a0complete his Route du Rhum qualification before 1 September<\/strong>, potentially race the D\u00e9fi Azimut \u2013\u00a0“From a sporting perspective, starting at least one race before the Route du Rhum would be fantastic, although it’s not the project’s absolute priority”<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 before heading to Saint-Malo\u00a0“to meet plenty of people and bring new partners into the Vend\u00e9e Globe adventure.”<\/em><\/p>\n
