After completing the Jules Verne Trophy at the end of January 2026 in 57 days, 21 hours and 20 minutes aboard <\/em>Idec Sport CIC\u00a0with\u00a0<\/em>The Famous Project CIC<\/em><\/a>, an all-female crew,\u00a0Alexia Barrier<\/strong>\u00a0announced on Thursday\u00a0her participation in the Route du Rhum Destination Guadeloupe<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0It was the perfect opportunity for Sailorz to look back at how this new chapter has been put together.<\/em><\/p>\n

“I will be\u00a0the first woman to race in the Ultim class in the Route du Rhum<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0Alexia Barrier announced enthusiastically on Thursday.\u00a0“Even though this will be my second Route du Rhum\u00a0<\/em>[15th in IMOCA in 2018, Ed.],\u00a0it feels like the first one<\/strong>\u00a0because the sporting challenge is huge. We are once again coming in as the underdogs, with a small budget and a small team, but with the ambition to perform well.”<\/em><\/p>\n

How was the decision to race the Route du Rhum (starting on 1 November from Saint-Malo) made?\u00a0“When we finished the Jules Verne Trophy, all our partners were really pleased with what we had achieved and we could feel that they wanted to continue the adventure. But we didn\u2019t know exactly how to make it happen,\u00a0it took us five months to define the outline of this new chapter<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0explains the skipper.<\/p>\n

Before adding:\u00a0“Several options were on the table and\u00a0we went through a short period of uncertainty<\/strong>. Between our desire to enter the Ultim circuit, the possibility of turning towards an international record programme, and our shared ambition to compete in the Route du Rhum, we took the time to think through a coherent programme that would meet everyone\u2019s needs. Personally,\u00a0I was eager to return to solo sailing<\/strong>, and I felt that racing solo on an Ultim was part of the progression I wanted to follow.\u00a0We also needed to know what\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Idec Sport<\/strong>\u00a0wanted to do, as they own the boat.”<\/em>\u00a0While finalising her project, Alexia Barrier had informed OC Sport Pen Duick of her desire to be on the Route du Rhum start line and received\u00a0confirmation that she could benefit from a wildcard entry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

THE FORMER\u00a0ACTUAL ULTIM 3<\/em>\u00a0CONSIDERED<\/span><\/h2>\n

Among the options considered by the team was changing boats for a more recent platform.\u00a0Acquiring the former\u00a0Actual Ultim 3<\/em><\/strong>, the trimaran eventually bought by Louis Burton with his new sponsor Armand Thiery, was one possibility explored.\u00a0“It was very tempting, but beyond our means<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Alexia Barrier.\u00a0“Moreover, you have to remain realistic in the current climate, and the idea is to keep a budget that is accessible for our partners and for those who might want to join us.\u00a0Our budget, which is \u20ac1.8 million for our 2026 programme,<\/strong>\u00a0is equivalent to those of the middle of the IMOCA fleet, while we are fortunate enough to be part of the leading class in offshore racing.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The budget is covered by the three partners of The Famous Project CIC, who have all committed again.\u00a0“Alexia<\/strong>\u00a0is challenging conventions and helping to move the whole discipline forward.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>We are proud to support her in this new adventure,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Eric Pasquier, vice-chairman of the board of directors of\u00a0Sopra Steria<\/strong>, in the press release, while\u00a0Idec<\/strong>\u00a0Group president Patrice Lafargue praises\u00a0“this determination to achieve what nobody has yet dared to do.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0Sailorz<\/em>, Laurent Metral, deputy managing director in charge of human resources and communications at\u00a0CIC<\/strong>, explains:\u00a0“The Route du Rhum is a project that fully matches our ambitions. We support it both for its sporting dimension \u2013 it is a legendary race that Alexia will compete in on a boat with an impressive track record \u2013 and for\u00a0this commitment to female entrepreneurship<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“THE AIM IS<\/em>\u00a0TO GROW GRADUALLY”<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

The project is still looking for partners<\/strong>\u00a0to support the Southern French sailor in the solo transatlantic race:\u00a0“Ideally,\u00a0we would need an additional \u20ac800,000 to be more comfortable<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0she explains.\u00a0“We would like to upgrade the electronics, replace more sails and strengthen our small team of around twelve people.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Partners are also being sought for the years ahead, as the team is already looking towards\u00a0two round-the-world campaigns in 2028<\/strong>: the Arkea Ultim Challenge (starting in January) and the Jules Verne Trophy at the end of the year. The ambition is also to equip the Ultim with new foils, a large cockpit cover, fibre optics and more technology.\u00a0“Our goal is<\/strong>\u00a0to gradually move towards larger budgets<\/strong>\u00a0so that we can have the same equipment and resources as the male projects in terms of boats, and be ready when purchase opportunities arise,”<\/em>\u00a0explains Alexia Barrier.<\/p>\n

Before adding:\u00a0“A\u00a0partner pool has just been created in Brest under the name Brest Oceans Leaders<\/strong>\u00a0to showcase the region where we have been based for a year and to give many companies the opportunity to be part of the adventure through entry-level contributions ranging from \u20ac1,000 to \u20ac50,000.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“FINISHING NOT TOO FAR BEHIND THE OTHERS”<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

The boat, which will be launched on 3 August, is currently undergoing a refit in Brest.<\/strong>\u00a0The work programme includes:\u00a0“Replacing our mainsail, which we blew out in Storm Ingrid two days before the finish of the Jules Verne Trophy, repairing our starboard foil and working on\u00a0the boat\u2019s ergonomics<\/strong>,”<\/em>\u00a0explains the sailor.\u00a0“We will cut down the winch pedestals and raise the floor<\/strong>\u00a0so that I am more comfortable during manoeuvres, and we plan to bring the galley, bunk and navigation station together under the cockpit cover so I don\u2019t have to go below deck.<\/em>\u00a0On my side, I have\u00a0100 days of physical, mental and nutritional preparation<\/strong>\u00a0to arrive fully ready,”<\/em>\u00a0says Alexia Barrier.\u00a0“For me, that is the biggest challenge, because the rest \u2013 sailing the boat \u2013 doesn\u2019t scare me.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Before completing her 1,200-mile solo qualifying passage during the third week of August, Alexia Barrier will train with three of her Jules Verne Trophy crew members \u2013 Dee Caffari, Annemieke Bes and Molly Lapointe \u2013 as well as sailors\u00a0Brian Thompson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Lo\u00efck Peyron<\/strong>, who will join her for a few days. The skipper emphasises that\u00a0“the aim will be to understand\u00a0how to handle such a large boat solo with my build<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0What about her sporting objective for the Route du Rhum?\u00a0“I know it will be a tough battle, especially at the start where there could be manoeuvres in strong winds,”<\/em>\u00a0replies Alexia Barrier.\u00a0“So the idea will be to stay focused, use this experience for the future and\u00a0finish not too far behind the others in Guadeloupe<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n
