The official presentation of the <\/em>Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe 2026<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0took place on Tuesday 22 September<\/a>\u00a0at the Folies Berg\u00e8res in Paris, preceded that morning by\u00a0<\/em>an economic press briefing<\/em><\/strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Sailorz<\/em>\u00a0was there to take a closer look at the key budget figures for this 13th edition, which will feature 118 solo sailors.<\/em><\/p>\n

As the organisers of the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or had done<\/a>\u00a0a year earlier, OC Sport Pen Duick invited the economic press on Tuesday morning for a briefing aimed at presenting\u00a0the key figures for the 2026 edition<\/strong>\u00a0of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe.<\/p>\n

OC Sport CEO Joseph Bizard opened proceedings, first reminding those present that the solo transatlantic race\u00a0“is\u00a0<\/em>a major event that reaches millions of people every four years<\/em><\/strong>, and the figures are often dizzying, particularly for the city of Saint-Malo, which welcomed 1.2 million visitors in 2022<\/em>\u00a0(60% from Brittany),<\/em>\u00a0and 300,000 in Guadeloupe”.<\/em>\u00a0He then stressed\u00a0the specific nature of the business model of such an event<\/strong>, which, like other major offshore races, relies neither on TV rights nor ticketing revenue,\u00a0“which generally account for 70% of the budget of this type\u00a0of event”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Bizard went on to add:\u00a0“<\/em>We actually make a loss on TV broadcasting<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0because producing the start and finish broadcasts costs us \u20ac500,000″;<\/em>\u00a0the start has not been exclusively reserved for France T\u00e9l\u00e9visions since the 2022 edition,\u00a0“first because France TV was increasingly unable to finance the operation, and secondly because opening up the feed to all broadcasters allows us to reach as wide an audience as possible”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Joseph Bizard then listed\u00a0“<\/em>the growing constraints<\/em><\/strong>“<\/em>\u00a0facing the organiser, from securing the site in Saint-Malo –\u00a0“the cost is exorbitant, it was \u20ac50,000 in 2014 compared with \u20ac1.1 million in 2026”<\/em>\u00a0– to\u00a0increasing investment driven by CSR considerations<\/strong>:\u00a0“We are now looking at a budget\u00a0<\/em>of around \u20ac400,000, compared with virtually nothing in 2018<\/em>“, he explains. He then cited the main related expenditure items, including\u00a0“demarcating and securing the Pointe du Grouin and Cap Fr\u00e9hel sites as part of the Natura 2000 scheme, carbon impact assessments, the extensive educational work needed to communicate on environmental issues, particularly mobility, and, this year,\u00a0<\/em>a 100% electric village in Saint-Malo<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to reduce our carbon footprint, which is not insignificant because it is much cheaper to use generators than to have electricity everywhere”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A budget of \u20ac11.5 million<\/span><\/h2>\n

These\u00a0“growing constraints”<\/em>, combined with inflation, explain why the budget –\u00a0around \u20ac8 million in 2018 and \u20ac10 million in 2022 –\u00a0has risen to\u00a0\u20ac11.5 million<\/strong>\u00a0this year. Of this,\u00a035% comes from sponsorship<\/strong>\u00a0(54 partners in total), including\u00a0the \u20ac1.5 million naming partnership<\/strong>\u00a0with the Guadeloupe Region, which, as with the other local authorities, is covered by a service procurement contract, mainly for communications and hospitality –\u00a0“There are no subsidies for the Route du Rhum”<\/em>, Joseph Bizard points out. The naming partnership expires at the end of the 2026 edition and, he adds,\u00a0“is no longer aligned with reality because it has been the same amount since 2014<\/em>“<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The remainder of the budget is broken down as follows:\u00a022% comes from village revenue and hospitality<\/strong>, with the latter – 20,000 people benefit from it – managed by Rivacom Events, a subsidiary, like OC Sport, of the Advenn Group, formerly Le T\u00e9l\u00e9gramme);\u00a020% comes from the host local authorities<\/strong>, \u20ac1.25 million from Saint-Malo, \u20ac1.1 million from Guadeloupe (in addition to the naming partnership), and \u20ac250,000 from the Brittany Region;\u00a0entry fees account for 20%<\/strong>\u00a0– \u20ac90,000 per Ultim, \u20ac30,000 per IMOCA, \u20ac20,000 per Ocean Fifty, \u20ac15,000 per Class40, \u20ac10,000 per Vintage Mono and Vintage Multi;\u00a0the remaining 3% comes from\u00a0“opportunistic revenue”<\/em>\u00a0(activations, accommodation and travel services\u2026).<\/p>\n

Joseph Bizard also pointed out that Saint-Malo\u00a0“invests around another \u20ac1 million”<\/em>, corresponding to the resources and staff deployed on and around the village, while\u00a0the Brittany Region provides the port,\u00a0“representing an estimated value of around \u20ac2 million<\/em><\/strong>“<\/em>, both being in-kind contributions that\u00a0“do not appear in the budget”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Asked about the economic impact of the last edition of the Rhum on the Saint-Malo area,\u00a0Jean-Virgile Crance<\/strong>, deputy mayor in charge of, among other things, yachting and boating, who was present at Tuesday morning\u2019s press briefing, cited\u00a0a total of \u20ac29 million in direct economic benefits and 700 jobs created<\/strong>\u00a0during the village period.\u00a0He added:\u00a0“Local businesses also tell us that, in general, the year following the race is a very good year, which shows that it contributes to promoting Saint-Malo\u2019s image.”<\/em>\u00a0For Crance,\u00a0“the Route du Rhum is an essential part of the city\u2019s history”<\/em>, to the point that it\u00a0“will have its place”<\/em>\u00a0in its future maritime museum, L\u2019Hydro (opening in 2029), and that it largely justifies the long-awaited development, by local professional teams, of\u00a0a genuine offshore racing hub<\/strong>, an\u00a0“10-year project”<\/em>\u00a0led primarily by the Brittany Region.<\/p>\n

While the budget for the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe is up for the 2026 edition, the organiser\u2019s ambition, according to Julie Coutts, managing director of OC Sport Pen Duick, is to\u00a0“do better rather than more”<\/em>.\u00a0When it comes to the fleet, the trend is even towards fewer boats<\/strong>, with 123 participants in 2018, 138 in 2022, and 118 this year.\u00a0“We want to continue having fewer boats<\/strong>; adding more competitors does not necessarily add interest in light of the constraints it creates”<\/em>, Joseph Bizard comments.<\/p>\n

The Saint-Malo village, which takes five weeks to set up, remains the same size as in 2022 (70,000 m2), with the aim of\u00a0“trying to spread visitor numbers more evenly over the 13 days of opening”<\/em>, notes Julie Coutts. Supported on mobility issues by the agency\u00a0Mollow<\/a>, OC Sport Pen Duick carried out a study on the previous edition, which reported an 80% satisfaction rate regarding ease of access to the village. This year, the organiser is announcing\u00a0a total of 281,000 train seats\u00a0<\/strong>to Saint-Malo during the village period, as well as 15 additional TGV trains from Paris (60,000 seats).<\/p>\n

Is the Route du Rhum profitable for OC Sport Pen Duick?\u00a0“In 2022, we lost more than \u20ac1 million<\/strong>, mainly because of the postponed start, which resulted in significant additional costs. For this edition, we are targeting a profit margin of between 3% and 5%”<\/em>, Joseph Bizard replies\u00a0[i.e. a result of between \u20ac345,000 and \u20ac575,000, ed.]<\/em>. Asked finally about OC Sport Pen Duick\u2019s annual turnover, he explains:\u00a0“In a Rhum year, we are around \u20ac15 million, which is nothing compared with the \u20ac350 million of Roland-Garros or the \u20ac150 million of the Tour de France, even though the Route du Rhum is one of the major events of the year. In 2027, when we have the Transat Paprec, the Tour de Belle-Ile and the Solitaire du Figaro Paprec, we will be at \u20ac3.5 million in turnover, so\u00a0over a four-year average, we are between \u20ac8 million and \u20ac10 million<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n
