With 27,000 boats produced over the course of four decades, First is a name that has now spanned several generations of sailors and regattas. Busy with its developments elsewhere since the year 2010, the world’s number 1 in yachting had kind of left the line to one side, that was before they decided a relaunch was due.
The boat building facility in Vannes a subsidiary of the Carboman Group wants to build an Imoca for the upcoming edition of The Ocean Race.
It is quite a specific segment of the yachting market but right now it is a dynamic, flourishing niche that is igniting the interest and passions of sailors, and stimulating the appetites of boatbuilders to develop new designs. The phenomenon is now being well served by French based J Composites. In 2018 the team, under Didier Le Moal, which has been building J/Boats udner licence in the Vendée for almost 25 years, alerted the well known Johnstone family, originators of J/Boats to the trend…..
It does not happen so often in racing sponsorship: an equipment manufacturer gives its name to a sailing event. After a successful first experience last year, Plastimo is teaming up again with Lorient Grand Large, the organiser of the first Atlantic-side Mini 6.50 race in the season in France, and names the event the Plastimo Lorient Mini 6.50. For the french company based in Lorient, it means much more than simply lending a hand.
