From 11 to 17 May, the National Sailing Institute (I2N) in Saint-Pierre-Quiberon, Brittany, will host the world championships of three Olympic classes: Nacra 17, 49er and 49er FX. A major event, as it is the only world championship in an Olympic discipline to be held in France in 2026, across all sports. Sailorz takes a behind-the-scenes look at how the event is being delivered. 

The Olympic sailing season has just begun with the test event for the 2027 World Championships in Fortaleza—where Lauriane Nolot took third place in kitefoil—and the Lanzarote International Regatta, notably marked by the victory of the Erwan Fischer/Clément Pequin duo in the 49er. This provides Sailorz an opportunity to review the French team’s ambitions for 2026.

At 39, Camille Lecointre is getting ready to compete in her fourth Olympic Games in the 470, held for Paris 2024 in a mixed format. With Jéréme Mion, the woman who finished 4th in 2012 (with Mathilde Géron), bronze medallist in 2016 and 2021 (with Hélène Defrance then Aloïse Retornaz) is aiming for another podium finish, before turning the page on Olympic sailing.  

From 28 July to 8 August, Marseille will host the ten sailing events of the Olympic Games. What are the chances of medals in the French squad? Tip & Shaft put the question to a number of athletes who have already taken part in Olympic sailing (or who are still active), including Jonathan Lobert (Finn), Pierre Le Coq (windsurfing), Lili Sebesi (49er FX) and Marie Barrué (ILCA 6), as well as Didier Ravon, journalist for Voiles et Voiliers.

From 28 July to 8 August, Marseille will be hosting the sailing events of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. 330 international sailors, including 14 from France, will be competing for the ten Olympic titles up for grabs. This is a major event for Marseille and the French team, who had to invest heavily to prepare for it. Tip & Shaft tells you all about it.

With just one month to go before the start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Jean-Baptiste Bernaz struck a blow with his victory on Wednesday in the ILCA 7 (ex Laser) at Kiel Week. Tip & Shaft caught up with the 37-year-old from Var, who is about to compete in his fifth Olympic Games.

The French Olympic Sailing Week of Hyères-Toulon Provence Méditerranée starts on April 23. And so it is a good opportunity for Tip & Shaft to catch up with the President of the FFV, the French Sailing Federation, Jean-Luc Dénéchau and discuss the Paris 2024 Games, the America’s Cup, the general dynamism of offshore and ocean racing as well as the conflict between François Gabart and the Ultim 32/23 class.

Barring a last-minute turnaround which is always possible, the mixed doubles offshore racing event, which was due to make its appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, is expected to be rejected by the IOC in early June. It is in December that the IOC are due to approve the Olympic sailing programme for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which was adopted by World Sailing two years ago. The programme includes the brand new mixed, double-handed offshore race, which, as the World Sailing Annual Conference starts, looks still under threat, especially if there is a change of president.
